Aquarium lighting

One of the questions that many fish owners have is “How long do I need to leave the aquarium lighting turned on?”

This is a frequent question that does not have an exact answer. When it comes to lighting, you sometimes just need to go with your gut instinct. But, there are some guidelines you can follow.

Perhaps the best amount of time that aquarium lighting should be turned on is between 6-12 hours each day. Fish should be able to rest in the evening as well, so it is usually best to turn the lights off at night. But tanks that include more plant life should be left on for between 10-12 hours each day. The plants need the increased amount of light to thrive and survive.

Still, the use of the aquarium lighting should be closely monitored. Leaving these lights on for too long could result in an increase of algae growth and quicker tank evaporation. Although this may not sound serious, the growth of algae could lead to making an unsafe environment for your fish. Likewise, the quicker the tank evaporates, the more work you need to do to refill.

Likewise, the tank temperatures could be affected by those who use aquarium lighting for several hours during the day.

Perhaps the best advice a person should take is to simply be consistent. Fish are able to adapt to small changes in aquarium lighting from time to time, but drastic changes could prove to be very harmful to their health.

The aquarium lighting question is not one that can simply be answered for all types of fish. It is best to keep an eye on your fish and evaluate their behavior when you change the lighting levels.
